Twins

Writer's picture: Karen ChadwickKaren Chadwick

This week my twin boys will be 21 years old…quite a milestone.

The fact that the three of us are still here is quite a miracle, born 6 weeks early they spent the first 10 days of their lives in the special care baby unit, and I awoke following a catastrophic haemorrhage in the intensive care unit.

Being a parent of twins is something unique, challenging and exhausting. It is no accident that my debut novel explores some of the experiences presented as a mum of twins and is captured in the title “Twinned.”

The day they were born changed my life and my whole attitude and approach to life. “Life is for living” I always say. Their first year of their life is a blur for me. It comprised of sheer hard work, intense sleep deprivation and a moderate dose of post-natal depression. But, oh the treasured memories! Seeing them sucking each other’s thumbs squished together in their cot, singing 4 rounds of happy birthday to each individually and then again in Welsh of course. As they grew older (and continuing) the arguments over who chose the best item on the menu, or if they chose the same item, who copied who! They are chalk and cheese, yet weirdly similar in lots of ways.

Now they are independent young adults following their own paths and continuing their life journeys, and I am one immensely proud mum.

Pen Blwydd Hapis and a Happy Birthday Oliver and Wesley. Love you to the moon and back. Mum. xx
